Hi everyone! This afternoon, after class I headed north to explore Bloor-Yorkville, to accompany my friend on a makeup shopping trip. Apparently part of Bloor street is like a huge PC Hooftstraat, and I had butterflies the whole time walking around there. On our way there we stopped by the Varsity Centre and Royal Ontario Museum to take some pictures. After she left for work I went looking for American Apparel to find a dress I have been eyeing for years. But boohoo, they do not sell this specific design in stores.
I did encounter a lovely makeup store though, selling budget brands we do not sell in Amsterdam (or are at least hard to find) I bought an eyelash curler and blending brush by E.L.F for 6 bucks, seen as I had forgotten my blending brush back at home and I lost my extra eyelash curler "cushion". I was way too cheap to spend more than 3-4 dollars on each of them, so I immediately purchased them when I saw them for sale this inexpensive, lol.
On my way home I quickly ate a sandwich I got at the cafe downstairs earlier this morning. Then it was (finally) time again for yoga class! The session was brutal though, I had never before experienced my knees hurting so bad. When class was finished I was starving of course (only had an apple and that sandwich), but I did not want to eat Chinese takeout again. I was feenin' for Chinese pork buns actually, but did not feel like going to Chinatown. After careful deliberation I decided to get my lazy butt up and walk a bit to buy some food I had not tried before yet. Southern food it was, and off I went to restaurant 'Southern Accent'.
Harbord street looked pretty "deprived" to me, lol. Anyways, I am not bashing it or anything but campus definitely looks better. Suddenly I was in a street full of houses, and I was a bit confused because I was in search of a restaurant. Turned out it is located in such a street, hehe. The place looked lovely, despite of the creepy ass masks everywhere, lol.
I ordered three appetizers instead of a main dish, just to try out the food. On my way home I spotted a Krispy Kreme shop. I. Could. Not. Resist. I justified it to myself by thinking "Well this is the only Krispy Kreme in Toronto, you might as well try out their famous glazed donut while you are here. You might not visit this part of the city again". And so I stepped into donut walhalla.
When I got home it was time to fill my hungry belly and gosh did I enjoy my food or what. The gumbo kind of reminds me of Surinamese okra soup and the sauce you get when cooking brown beans. It was delicious and I already feel bummed we do not sell this kind of food in Amsterdam (or The Netherlands for that matter). The jambalaya was pretty spicy, and the cornbread tasted like keksie (Suriname cake), but a bit salty. I will definitely try to bake one as soon as I am home again!
The donuts were yummy (better than Tim's?), although the chocolate chip caramel was just over the top. It did not occur to me at the store that it was the chocolate donut, just with some caramel (which I do not even like that much) and chocolate chips on top. I automatically assumed chocolate chips would be in the dough, but I was dead wrong. Note: I did not finish these donuts, lol. I just bought them to try them out (around CA$1 each).
