Rollende keukens 2014

The weather has been great these past weekends, and what better way to enjoy the sun than to grub in it?! I visited the "Rollende Keukens" [Rolling Kitchens] at the Westerpark, which is an annual food festival with a lot of food trucks. Of course I made sure I arrived there with a fairly empty stomach, because I wanted to try out as many food trucks as possible.

I was excited for the trucks, seen as I had not come across any since leaving Canada. When I was studying there I had the biggest crush on the Chinese food truck across the street. The food there was delicious and super affordable! Unfortunately it had slipped my mind that this festival was in Amsterdam, where hardly anything is ever cheap when it comes to prepared food. Unless you want it frozen from a box, of course. This meant I could not try out as much as I wanted to, without having to spend a fortune on food. So we kept it simple, and only tried out three stands.

First we had some pulled pork on a bun and ribs. The pork was a bit cold, and it was not as spiced as I expected. It was nice, but it definitely did not beat my Canadian pulled pork poutine.

This right here is just pure danger! Ever since I had this delicious chocolate covered pretzel, I have been fiending it. Unfortunately I have not found a place that sells similar doughy pretzels yet. The AH to go's pretzel does not even come near the real deal.

Lastly, we saw a huge line at the Jamaican stand, so of course we could not resist the jerk wings. For about 10 euro's I got a plate of plantains and supposedly jerk chicken. I think the person claiming this was jerk chicken, was a jerk for doing so. Although I have not tried any Jamaican food aside from this, I refuse to believe this was the real deal. The wings tasted like stock boiled chicken, nothing more. I would say this was a waste of money. I could have bought more pretzels!

Of course I did not leave content, so I was very persistent in convincing my so to go downtown for something sweet. We ended up at my favorite terrace (Häagen-Dazs), where you can get icecream and waffles (Disregard the lactose intolerance here). Little did I know, this place would close down a few weeks later without any warning. It was actually the last location of this chain in The Netherlands, which is such a pity.
