Beef surprise (review Supperclub A'dam)


Before I was invited to dine at Supperclub for the first time, I actually thought it was a lounge bar and/or club. My expectations were not set too high, considering that I did not have the slightest clue what to expect. Out of the two SC's in Amsterdam, this one is located in an alley of the city's main shoppingstreet De Kalverstraat. After passing through a huge door (one must ring the bell to enter) we were welcomed by eccentrically dressed staff members and asked to wait in the red bar.

After having waited for a while, actually giving you an opportunity to mingle with other guests, we were seated in a white room. I was rather confused at first, because I only saw a bar and a balcony on each side of the room. We were asked to take off our shoes before being seated (too bad I chose to wear thigh-high boots). Apparently, dining at SC entails sitting on a white cushy mattress for the evening, with some pillows to sit against.

Secondly, there is no table for your plates of food. It became clear very soon that although the prices are everything but, the dining style at SC is very casual. Before our first course was served we were handed out a large cotton napkin and a blue rubber glove. Seen as the cutlery was missing from this picture we figured we were supposed to eat with our hands, and indeed this was the case. Luckily the rubber did not affect the wonderful taste of the entrée, beet salad topped with bruschetta.


The third and fourth course were served on plates including cutlery. We first had fish with ravioli, mushrooms, and peas. Then we had a delicious rare to medium steak with mashed potatoes. Because it was really dark in the room, I did not notice the steak was not well done. Before today I had never tried any rare or medium beef, because I was taught at home that it is not healthy, lol. I guess it is a cultural thing too, because most Surinamese people do not appreciate a pink to red color of meat. Although I only noticed what I had eaten when I looked at the pictures at home, needless to say I was sold from that day on (regarding rare to medium beef).


While enjoying these exquisitely tasting meals, the room below us started to fill up with people because SC's clubbing area had already opened for the night. As a guest, you are welcomed to join the club party after dinner without paying entry. I decided to roam around after finishing the fifth and final course, which was a dessert of gingerbread and icecream, and left home after a short bit feeling very satisfied and being a lovely experience richer.
